About Corten

Please note that we may dispatch a Corten Steel product at any stage of its weathering process.

Corten Weathering Steel (also known as Cor-Ten) is popularly used to create outdoor sculptures such as the Angel of the North and bridges due to its incredible strength.  The name COR-TEN refers to the two distinguishing properties of this type of steelcorrosion resistance and tensile strength

Cor-ten (known as weathering steel) organically evolves to its environment, producing a vibrant orange patina, which not only protects the steel but creates a stunning rustic finish. Please see our image gallery for an example of the weathering process and colour changes the product can go through. Please note its “run off” properties as some staining to surfaces can occur in the initial curing period.

The natural weathering of Corten usually takes between 1 and 9 months depending on climate. During this time, some patina run off may occur, with possible staining to adjacent materials (such as concrete, paving slabs, tarmac, decking etc). We therefore advise customers to take this into account when initially positioning their product. Once the patina has fully developed the steel will self-seal eliminating any run off. LuxUnique are not responsible for any staining that may occur as a result of run off during the weathering process.

Corten Weathering Guide

Cor-Ten Steel naturally weathers over time to create a beautiful rusty orange-brown patina.  It is often selected for its practical benefits and corrosion resistant qualities, but recently has become the trendy choice for garden landscaping. Corten is incredibly strong and was originally developed for bridge building.

Cor-Ten Develops its own protective film which slows the rate of corrosion

Saves the cost of initial painting and the maintenance costs of repainting.

Gives corrosion protection to unpainted areas which have been damaged.

Corten Steel is extremely durable and has a far higher resistance to atmospheric corrosion than other steels.

Step by Step Weathering Guide of Cor-Ten Steel

Stage 1 – Freshly manufactured Corten Steel. At this stage the dark oily residue coats the Corten Steel

Stage 2 – The oily residue is beginning to break down, as the Corten Steel begins to weather.

Stage 3 & 4 – The “Run-Off” stage – This can take around 3-9 months depending on weather and positioning.

Stage 5 & 6 – The final stages of the weathering process. Some “Run-Off” may still occur as the Corten Steels patina   develops to a striking, more consistent appearance.

Run Off

During the weathering process the Corten Steel produces carbon run off or staining to adjacent materials such as stone or concrete.  To reduce any possible staining, we recommend raising the product up off the ground by placing it on a suitable slab of concrete which will prevent any direct contact with the flooring material and reduce the risk of any run off staining occurring.  After the initial reactive period the Corten will cure and self-seal, with little to no carbon run off.  The weathering process of this product is integral to it and as such we will not accept any responsibility for damage caused to surrounding materials as a result of carbon run off. After the initial reactive period Corten steel will cure and self-seal with little to no carbon run off.

Delivery

Delivery Information (FAQ’s)

How much does it cost?

Due to the heavy nature and size of the products we offer, our postage rates vary depending upon the size and weight of products and the courier we use to distribute each product.  Delivery charges are clearly stated at checkout and we do offer discounted postage for multiple items.

Why do you charge for delivery?

The delivery charge covers the cost of processing, packing, checking and finally delivering your goods.  Every order that we dispatch is processed, selected from stock, or fabricated to order, quality checked and packaged to ensure it arrives with you in pristine condition.  The costs of this process and the materials used are not added into the product cost and we simply charge what is needed to cover our costs.

Where do you deliver?

We only deliver to mainland UK at the prices set on our website.  Unfortunately we are unable to ship to Northern Ireland or outside of mainland UK.

How long will I wait for my order to be delivered?

For stock items we aim to dispatch within 5 working days.  Our usual dispatch days are Tuesday and Wednesday each week.

For non- stock (made to order) items our lead time is 4-5 weeks from order.  We will notify you once the product has been fabricated and is ready to be dispatched.

I’d like my order to be left in a safe place or with a neighbour if I’m not in.  Can you arrange this?

If you advise us of a safe place to leave the item in the event that you are not home, we will pass this information onto the courier.  Since our deliveries require a signature; if you do choose to provide a safe place then we cannot accept responsibility for goods once they have been left.
