High Grade Corten Steel

Manufactured from high grade Genuine Corten Weathering steel, this Modern Corten Steel Fire Pit is built to last. The weathering steel oxidises to create an anti corrosion layer which will give your Fire Pit a a life of 20 years and beyond. Its design is not only striking to look at but extremely strong and durable; weighing a heavy 25KG .  For more information on Corten and the weathering process, please see our about corten page.

Our products are made from thicker Corten than some competitors.  We only use 3 or 4mm Corten for our products to ensure their strength and rigidity.   Most other sellers offer 2mm Corten which compromises on strength and durability and some don’t even specify the thickness!

A stainless steel ash tray is available to purchase to collect the ash as the fire burns.

About Corten

Please note that we may dispatch a Corten Steel product at any stage of its weathering process.

Corten Weathering Steel (also known as Cor-Ten) is popularly used to create outdoor sculptures such as the Angel of the North and bridges due to its incredible strength.  The name COR-TEN refers to the two distinguishing properties of this type of steelcorrosion resistance and tensile strength

Cor-ten (known as weathering steel) organically evolves to its environment, producing a vibrant orange patina, which not only protects the steel but creates a stunning rustic finish. Please see our image gallery for an example of the weathering process and colour changes the product can go through. Please note its “run off” properties as some staining to surfaces can occur in the initial curing period.

The natural weathering of Corten usually takes between 1 and 9 months depending on climate. During this time, some patina run off may occur, with possible staining to adjacent materials (such as concrete, paving slabs, tarmac, decking etc). We therefore advise customers to take this into account when initially positioning their product. Once the patina has fully developed the steel will self-seal eliminating any run off. LuxUnique are not responsible for any staining that may occur as a result of run off during the weathering process.

Cor-Ten Steel naturally weathers over time to create a beautiful rusty orange-brown patina.  It is often selected for its practical benefits and corrosion resistant qualities, but recently has become the trendy choice for garden landscaping. Corten is incredibly strong and was originally developed for bridge building.

Cor-Ten Develops its own protective film which slows the rate of corrosion

Saves the cost of initial painting and the maintenance costs of repainting.

Gives corrosion protection to unpainted areas which have been damaged.

Corten Steel is extremely durable and has a far higher resistance to atmospheric corrosion than other steels.

Step by Step Weathering Guide of Cor-Ten Steel

Stage 1 – Freshly manufactured Corten Steel. At this stage the dark oily residue coats the Corten Steel

Stage 2 – The oily residue is beginning to break down, as the Corten Steel begins to weather.

Stage 3 & 4 – The “Run-Off” stage – This can take around 3-9 months depending on weather and positioning.

Stage 5 & 6 – The final stages of the weathering process. Some “Run-Off” may still occur as the Corten Steels patina   develops to a striking, more consistent appearance.

Run Off

During the weathering process the Corten Steel produces carbon run off or staining to adjacent materials such as stone or concrete.  To reduce any possible staining, we recommend raising the product up off the ground by placing it on a suitable slab of concrete which will prevent any direct contact with the flooring material and reduce the risk of any run off staining occurring.  After the initial reactive period the Corten will cure and self-seal, with little to no carbon run off.  The weathering process of this product is integral to it and as such we will not accept any responsibility for damage caused to surrounding materials as a result of carbon run off. After the initial reactive period Corten steel will cure and self-seal with little to no carbon run off.

  • Do not use an accelerant such as petrol to light the firepit. This may damage the firepit.
  • Never leave a burning firepit unattended.
  • Ensure the firepit is fully cooled before cleaning out.
  • We recommend a flat surface to place our firepits.  Do not place it directly onto wooden surfaces such as decking.
  • The firepit should be placed at least 3 metres away from any stricture or combustible surface.
